GONGXEKA’S PROFILE
Nomonde
Gongxeka’s career in the field of media
spurns well over 14years. She has worked extensively
in the field of edutainment, communication for
social change, both on air as well as in a managerial
capacity behind the scenes. She spent 9years
of her pre-teen and teenage years in Funda Centre
School of Arts in Soweto where she studied dance
and drama. She is known and respected for the
cutting edge work she did as presenter, researcher
and producer for the pioneering Youth Investigative
Programme called Inside Info. Inside Info kept
South Africa’s viewers glued to their
screens for 4years and also came second in the
1998 Grand Prix Television Jeunes International
Awards for the insert she produced on Male Circumcision.
She also starred in award winning dramas such
as Yizo Yizo and Soul City.
In
1999 she became a part of a four member team
that was instrumental in setting up and developing
the Media Division of loveLife. During her tenure,
she co-produced with MTV a World AIDS Day documentary
Staying Alive-the South African Story. In 2003,
10years after having worked in front of the
cameras for Soul City: Institute for Health
Development & Communications, she rejoined
the organisation as Project Manager for the
organisation’s award winning children’s
series Soul Buddyz 3.
In
2000 she was appointed to serve in the South
African National Aids Council (SANAC), the highest
body advising government on HIV and AIDS. She
was also appointed to serve in SANAC’s
Information, Education & Communications
Technical Task Team. She is also the recipient
of the 2001 Soul Citizen Award for her dedicated
work towards community development and upliftment.
She also participated in the UNICEF’s
Round Table Discussions towards developing Early
Childhood Development (ECD) programmes for television,
radio & print materials for a project called
“Media with and about children”.
She
has also worked as a trainer for child radio
and television producers. She designed and developed
a Curriculum Course Outline on Research &
Programme Development for third year students,
which she also lectured at National Electronic
Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA).
In
2005, Nomonde worked on a three part documentary
series called “Flowers of the Revolution”
which was broadcast on SABC 1 in August 2006.
On this project she worked as a researcher,
script writer and co-director. The series was
designed to explore the lives of South African
women who sacrificed the comforts of their ordinary
lives to contribute to the struggle against
apartheid. The women showcased in the series
were drawn from a cross section of ethnic, religious
and social backgrounds but all shared one common
passion – “Freedom, justice and
equality for their people”.
In
mid 2005 Nomonde joined the SABC where she held
a title of Programming Project Manager for SABC
1. The Programming Department is responsible
for the entire editorial content that goes on
air within the channel. She was also tasked
to formulate Business Processes to ensure that
programmes were delivered for transmission on
time.
Because of her extensive knowledge in broadcasting,
a content developer & having worked for
social entrepreneur organisations, in June 2006
she was seconded to join SABC’s newly
founded Business Development Unit as a Funding
& Partnerships Executive. She was tasked
to set up and put in place systems and business
processes for the sub unit she currently resides
in. In her current portfolio she is expected
to raise Funding for production of SABC’s
content for both Television & Radio and
also SABC Special Projects, to build and forge
strategic partnerships with various stakeholders.
She
holds a Diploma in Journalism, various certificates
in building Brands and holds a Management Advancement
Programme (MAP) qualification from the Wits
Business School. She is currently enrolled for
the Broadcasting Policy & Regulatory Framework
Programme with the Wits Graduate School of Public
& Development Management (P&DM).
