CALL FOR ENTRIES – MDDA/SANLAM LOCAL MEDIA AWARDS 2011

The MDDA/SANLAM Local Media Awards include community print (newspapers and magazines) and community broadcasting (radio and television).

The objectives of the Awards are to:-

• Promote, encourage and strengthen grassroots media,

• Promote media development and diversity, and

• Promote and recognize excellence.

Participation in the MDDA/SANLAM Local Media Awards is on the principle of inclusivity and peer-to-peer recognition.

The Awards are held to encourage all local/grassroots media to go beyond the call of duty and produce news and current affairs that meet the highest standard and to also recognize their hard work.

This project is initiated by SANLAM and the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) in partnership with the Department of Communications (DoC), Government Communications and Information Systems (GCIS) and Print Media Association of South Africa (PMSA). It is implemented in partnership with other organizations representing the Local Media, like the National Community Radio Forum (NCRF), National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), Independent Federation of Religious Broadcasters (IFRB), Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ), Association of Independent Publishers (AIP),

Sanlam and the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) joined forces this year to celebrate excellence in the local media industry of South Africa. The 2010 Sanlam/MDDA Local Media Awards were presented at a gala dinner in Johannesburg on Friday evening , 19 November 2010 . The Awards were attended by close to 300 editors, journalists, photographers, broadcasters and their proud seniors and peers.

Sanlam/MDDA Local Media Awards 2010

The Local Media Awards 2010 is a partnership between Sanlam and the Media Development & Diversity Agency (MDDA). The Awards aim to encourage excellence and to reward meritorious work in community journalism. The media partners for the Awards are the South African Broadcast Corporation (SABC) and the Print Media South Africa (PMSA). The projects is implemented in partnership with other organizations representing the Local Media, like the National Community Radio Forum (NCRF), National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), Independent Federation of Religious Broadcasters (IFRB), Forum of Community Journalists (FCJ), and the Association of Independent Publishers (AIP).
The Call for Entries is open between 02 – 31 August 2010 and the Awards ceremony will be hosted on 05 November 2010.

OBJECTIVES OF THE EVENT

  • Reward and recognize excellence in the Local Media i.e. Print, Radio, Television and New Media;
  • To encourage all grassroots media to go beyond the call of duty and produce news and current affairs that meets the highest standard and to also recognize their hard work;
  • To promote professionalism in the Local Media and built capacity in the respective areas of focus;
  • To contribute to the growth and development of the media;
  • Entrench the commitment to enhancing journalism as a career in the South African public
